Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

Christina Rossetti

The wind picked up in Portland today, twisting the trees outside of our house into bizarre contortions and scattering the first of the true fall-colored leaves all about the courtyard. When we drove out to do some snack-errands, branches were flying off of the pine trees and blowing into the highway. Our car was rattling and was pushed about the road like it was another red or orange leaf. I think the wind gusts were up to 60 MPH earlier in the afternoon and so we holed up with sake, manapua, mochi, and sushi from Uwajimaya (our local Asian market) and, a very fitting film: The Wind Rises.

Ben and I are big Hayao Miyazaki fans and we have been trying to watch this movie for ages (we've watched all of his other works). We finally got our hands on a copy and, bundled up in blankets and comfy pants, we're dedicating the day to great movies while listening to the wind whistle. This has been a much needed day-of-rest after a long week of late nights and business. Thank you, windy weather, for rendering all other activities pointless and a movie-day required.
