When the coldest season sets in (and this week's 19 degree temps are sure cold), all I want to do is wear cable knit sweaters. There's really nothing quite so comfy and perfect for all occasions. I try not to recycle my cable knit sweater looks too often and that requires constant new layering innovations. When I started this blog, I was not a layer-er and am far from a pro, but I feel myself getting closer to layering godliness (also known as J.Crew catalogs). Though I just got myself a new blue cable knit from Gap that I just love, my tried and true sweater, is the cropped H&M one I'm wearing below. Two seasons in and it's going strong. All hail H&M.
The first, and probably most unexpected way, to take a cable knit cropped sweater is into the dressy category. However, pair a white sweater with a black dress or a cobalt maxi skirt and you're instantly in a dressy winter outfit appropriate for a nice dinner or holiday party at work. I love this sweater against any color that makes it pop - and I think the cobalt does that excellently. On black, the sweater is more traditional and a little less "wow!"

It's more standard to wear a cable knit for work or as casual wear. But I try not to get too boring with my weekend looks in just a simple sweater and jeans (too easy, people!). My favorite way to dress up this top on weekend outings is to pair a fun printed top underneath, letting the collar and shirt tails hang out underneath. With a pair of tall riding boots, you're ready for any event, be it muddy, classy, or boozy.
Or you can just find a place somewhere in between both - a more casual look complete with a layered top underneath, a pencil skirt, and tights. I would wear the look below to work to stay warm and yet look a little bit more office appropriate than the above with jeans.
I love these cable knit sweaters below:
From L to R, top: Gap cable knit pullover / Michael Kors color block sweater / Cable knit sweater / Chunky cable-knit cardigan
Bottom: Caslon cable knit sweater / Cabled sweater jacket / H&M knit sweater / Marled ombre cable sweater
