Choose Skin Health

On the day that's normally thought of as Cinco de Mayo - the hailing of margaritas on sun-decks and chips and salsa galore - there's actually another reason to pay attention that's a little bit more heavily focused on awareness rather than drinking tequila until you want to argue with someone you love.

This first Monday in May is the American Academy of Dermatology's Melanoma Monday (I know it sounds a lot less complimentary to a mariachi band, but it's important). It's a day dedicated to raising awareness of skin cancer and encouraging people to focus on their skin health. It's not often that people in this age group (the 20s) think about cancer as a big risk. But melanoma is the most common cancer in young people between the ages of 25-29. You can blame spring break in Cabo and all of the final's weeks when May was sunny and you laid out in bikinis on your college lawn for that. Melanoma is highly treatable when caught with self-detection and exams. That fact is important to remember when you realize that one American dies every hour from melanoma.

This year, along with the AAD's Melanoma Monday, Neutrogena is launching their #ChooseSkinHealth campaign. They're working to raise awareness about skin cancer and encourage people to use their SPF, be careful about their exposure to the sun, and get proactive.

I've always been a Neutrogena facial moisturizer user (that product in the photo was yanked out of my shower/bathroom cabinet for this post, not gifted to me). From the time that my mom started emphasizing moisturizer in high school until now when I feel like my face is a cracking desert floor without moisturizer in the morning, I'm always lathered with my base level of SPF for all days. I also always choose an SPF foundation to layer on top of my moisturizer base. Since I walk to and from work and often walk during my lunch breaks, this helps keep my face protected not only during sunny days but during those sneaky overcast days when you get accidentally burned.

I think that making SPF a daily habit can be so helpful to your skin health and it can also remind you that on warmer and sunnier days (especially as our great weather approaches), that more than just a layer of foundation is needed to keep your skin happy, healthy, and cancer free. I know that most of your care about your skin just as much as I do (I want it to last!) and are great about keeping sunscreen in your house and lathering it up when you go out and spend time in the sun, but make sure that you're prepared on the go. I am considering investing in Neutrogena's sunscreen sticks. They could definitely fit in my desk and work to protect my shoulders and fair skin on days when I decide to walk at lunch.

How do you make sure that you're covered up and protected on sunny days?

I am a Neutrogena Ambassador (it means Neutrogena is sponsoring a few posts this year) but all of the opinions expressed in this post are my own and the product displayed was my own.
