I had one of those days today. When the work day seemed not like eight hours but eighteen. Every minute like two, every hour seemed like three, and my lunch break like a blink in time. I suppose my math doesn't add up, but if you work anywhere or have ever watched a pot boil, you know what I am talking about. What is it that causes that trick of time and of the clock? I technically know that today was like every other day, eight hours of work long... but man it felt good to get home, step out into the sunshine and give my eyes (and butt) a break from my desk space.

I love my job, my company, and I love my colleagues, which is more than many others out there can say, but we work in an open office environment. Code for: everything is everyone else's business. If my coworker is crabby, we know it. If someone feels sick, we know it. If I brought tuna fish for lunch, everyone knows it. If the music-of-choice is pissing off another group in the office, oh. we. know. it. With cubicles you have some separation of space from your colleagues, albeit a thin one, but when your desks are smushed together in a pod and you stare across yours at another person, there's little privacy. In a sales environment (and for a world-class eavesdropper like yours truly), it's perfect. We vibe off of each others excitement, we can share a lot of little pieces of the day, and we can constantly collaborate by leaning across the desk to ask questions. But when someone's fussy, or hungry, or had a bad commute, or brought something smelly for lunch, it definitely sets us all off.

Today was one of those grumpy days. And we all muddled through the achingly long day, hoping for some positive news to pick everyone's mood up, or at least the arrival of pre-Friday (that's Thursday) for everyone's sanity. In the end, it did arrive. I had a really productive day. We got some good activity up on our boards and we all left with smiles on our faces.

Do you have any recommendations for getting through one of those days, like today? I often find headphones are paramount and a few minutes on Calm.com can do wonders for the mind.

  1. Glad that everything worked out fine at work in the end. I'm working for myself and even though I do work from home, I also have these kind of days which feel just blaah and everything goes on my nerves and esp. if the weather is so bad, then I stay even more inside and work "after-hours" and then I start to suffer headache and backache... Sometimes we would all just like to take a moment off from our jobs and for me the best way to "rejuvenate" quickly is to go on a quick power walk, grab a quick favourite coffee or maybe listen to the iPod.
