The Great Desk Clean-Up

I once went almost a year without vacuuming the carpeted area in my apartment (this was three and a half years ago, right out of college). Does that distress you? It gives me this really upset feeling thinking about what lurked beneath my feet. I swept the wood floors and mopped them on the regular, but just didn't own a vacuum and so I conveniently forgot about it. By the time we moved out and I borrowed a vacuum from a friend, I felt rather horrified at what was sucked up off of the floor and into that vacuum cleaner. I'm sure all you other long-locked ladies can empathize and can easily guess what was in there - hair.

I've had long hair for most of my life (this recent cut is one of my shortest in recent history) and it has proven to be the absolute bane of my vacuuming existence. In my senior year of college, living with five other women of longer-than-shoulder-length hair, our house shared a vacuum cleaner. On chore day the aggressive whir of that old thing would fill the entire home with the smell of burning hair. The brush roll would get so clogged up with long hair that I would have to do extensive brush roll surgery with a pocket knife just to stop the small fires the vacuum was starting. It was extremely gross and I think I was the only person willing to deal with all that hair.

Fast forward to my current home and we have a mix of carpet, area rugs, and wood floor. Our carpeted portions of the house are our stairs (why?!) and the bedroom. I consider the stairs and the bedroom to be the top hair-collecting zones of the house and my cat and I equally share in the burden of shedding constantly, all over everything. If I were to leave my current house un-vacuumed I'm pretty sure I'd die in the fur and long hair snowdrifts that inevitably accumulate. I just realized that I sincerely hope you're not reading this at breakfast because you could lose your appetite.

I've been using a very lightweight vacuum I got a few years ago and it has reared the ugly brush roll problem I was so irritated by in college. Within one vacuum (which I do weekly) the brush roll is a nightmare of string (from calligraphy projects) and my (formerly) very long hair. If you've ever cleaned a vacuum's brush roll, you know it's not pleasant, not pretty, and it makes you question if you have any hair left. It has been and obnoxious weekly cleaning process that I've been unable to avoid.

My apologies for this old-vacuum photo (but the struggle is real!). See the new vacuum's awesome brush roll cleaning power below. Those few strands were rolled up into the brush after vacuuming one square foot of carpet. The cleaning process took under 10 seconds with the push of a button.

Until now (you probably guessed I was going to say that). I just got my hands on the Eureka Brushroll Clean™ with SuctionSeal®, available at Walmart, and one of the most frustrating problems I've ever encountered has been cut (pun intended) out of my life. This behemoth of a vacuum cleaner (it's heavy and it seriously works) has a self-cleaning brush roll. The touch of a button and it sliced away all the hair building up in the brush and the vacuum was like new. I recently used my new Eureka Brushroll Clean™ with SuctionSeal® to revamp my bedroom desk area. Sitting at it all day, shedding hair and eraser particles from calligraphy projects, has taken a toll on the carpet and rugs in my bedroom. Keeping the pet dander, the obnoxious hair from piling up, and cleaning up bits and pieces of paper, gave my bedroom an entirely new feel!

What would you do with the time saved from cleaning your long-hair filled brush roll? I'm definitely reaping the rewards! Check out Eureka's website for more!

  1. I feel the pain with the vacuum cleaner that doesn't work... My dorm situation gave us a vacuum cleaner and it's so terrible I might as well go without using one... Ugh.

  3. I can definitely relate! Sometimes it's just such a pain, right? As someone with long hair - that I seem to loose ALL the time, the roller cleaning petal is such a great addition! XO

  7. I usually have long hair, as well, and we have two cats and a dog. We are all constantly shedding, and no matter how often we sweep and vacuum, we still have hair everywhere! The vacuum looks awesome!

  9. A self-cleaning brush roll? Nice! We have a mix of carpet and hardwoods, and I cannot wait until the day we can rip out ALL of our carpets for hardwoods! We'll be needing a new vacuum in the next year or so, too, and this vacuum looks awesome.

  11. Man... I love that! I don't have long hair, but I do shed like crazy. I've been looking for a good vacuum to replace my ancient one and this looks like a contender.

  15. I have been scraping by with the most pathetic of vacuums since senior year of college. It made sense for just my bedroom at the time, but now it doesn't stand a chance against the two bedroom apartment. Looking into a new vacuum ASAP!

I also adore your calligraphy bunny. I need to figure something like that out!
