At Home

I haven't wanted to feature our apartment on the blog because I don't feel like our apartment is a blog-worthy space. After seeing countless home tours on Style Me Pretty, A Beautiful Mess, and The Everygirl (to name a few), my house feels like a frumpy, amateur, hobbit hole. Actually, Bilbo Baggins' house was way nicer than mine, so scratch that hobbit comment. There are a million pieces that need to be added, replaced, revamped, and rearranged, but I am working on realizing that my life isn't a magazine article and it's not a famous bloggers' apartment tour. Everything in our apartment has been slowly collected and, quite frankly, earned - from the rug to the coffee table to the framed photos on the wall. It hasn't been easy to make this space presentable, but I think we get closer every single day.

So below is my really imperfect, not-perfectly-lit apartment featuring the couch that I hate and the wall colors that I'd really like to paint white.

Coffee table, rug (similar), mud-bench: World Market; Succulents: Porch Light; Sheepskin: Ikea

I'm really starting to love the living room area with the completed gallery wall, the rug-on-rug action, and this gorgeous World Market coffee table that adds an industrial chic edge to the whole room. On my replacement list is this darn couch that we bought when we first got our own place. It's really comfy and really ugly. I've been lusting after the Henry couch from West Elm or the cute Abbott Sofa from World Market.

This is Ben's makeshift study space - our old dining room table. By using our old table as a desk, we didn't need to add office furniture to the small apartment and our living room still feels very living/dining rather than home-office.

I love the kitchen and bathroom spaces just because they're bigger and more updated than our last place. They don't need much in addition to make them pretty spaces to live in.

Tray: Nate Berkus for Target; Lamp: Target; Vase, bedside table: World Market

Top: Steven Alan; Jeans: Paige Denim

I like my bedroom to be bright and composed of mainly white furniture. It makes it easier to wake up in the morning and lets the sun illuminate the room all day. A great bed frame and headboard are also on my wishlist as you can see that our bed is on the ground. I'd also love to update my comforter, but this quilt has served us really well and is the same color as kitty's fur (it hides everything)... and that's something I am not ready to give up.

Here's to imperfect homes and the growing list of improvements that keep everything interesting!

  9. I love how you've decorated your space! I think it says something when it can look that good, but actually look like people live there and it's not straight out of a magazine article. I'm always comparing my room to the ones I see in blogs and have to remind myself that I'm still a student and not a full time blogger :) I've got a new post I would love for you to check out!

  13. This is sooo cute. You can totally see the pieces of your personal style shine throughout each room. I know what you mean about how intimidating the posh/polished home tours can be. You should be proud of your place. It looks beautiful!!!

  14. Your place is lovely!. I love seeing places that are real, & made up of things that you love. I am in this in-between grad school phase, so it is the little things that make me happy - a sheepskin throw, curated gallery wall, a little coffee table styling.

  15. Gifts are your true representatives to your loved relations. No matter how apart you are from them, a simple gift can diminish all the barriers between you and them. Your care, your affection, and most importantly, gifts house your presence to them. Visit www.thailandblooms.com for further details.

  16. I would say that this is an amazing apartment! Everything looks so cozy, and there are little knick-knacks everywhere that add a personal touch. Looks like a warm living space, sure, maybe those all black and white apartments look better, but hands down, apartments like these, are the best, because you can actually live in them and feel like at home not in an advert in Vogue Home.

  20. I love it Kelsey! I can't wait to get my own space one day and decorate, which for sure won't be happening any time soon ... :-/ I see the Netter's Anatomy Atlas on Ben's study table! I miss being in anatomy lab. Part of me wishes I could go back to first year, cause this year is driving me crazy, but then I remember that I am one more year closer to becoming a doctor and I feel much better. :) Hope all is well on your end!
