What Would You Wear to NYFW?

Top: Express; Skirt, heels: c/o Lulu*s; Belt: H&M; Bracelet: Stella and Dot

I'm sitting at home watching old episodes of ANTM today and watching the gorgeous weather blow by outside. I came down with another cold this past week. Ugh! What's up with this city? It seems to be slamming me with sickness. What that means in practice is that I didn't actually wear this outfit anywhere today, but when I styled it, it got me thinking about that four-letter acronym that has everyone in a tizzy this week. NYFW.

New York Fashion Week means very little to me - which might be weird, because I blog about my personal style. But it seems like this elusive thing happening across the world that famous bloggers in high heels fly out to enjoy. Fashion week also means very expensive clothes that fly down the runway setting the trends for the season to come (usually delayed a bit as I don't think trends hit the West coast for, say, a year or two). I think I also understand very little of the practical elements of NYFW - how does one get invited? Where do you go? How are those front row seats distributed? Are you supposed to wear that specific designer to the designer's show? Kate Spade to Kate Spade? Doesn't that seem a bit... obvious? Is fashion week casual or dressy? Can you wear flats? Are there band-aid stations? Clearly I don't really know what's happening over there in noisy New York City. (Also, do you all know? Have you been? Now I'm curious!)

My confused pondering has had me thinking about what I'd wear to fashion week, and I definitely think the stunners of the street-style photos are always the perfect, all-black tailored outfits that look like they're neither trying too hard nor too casual. So that's today's outfit inspiration - some kind of miles-away fashion week imitation.

What would you wear that's currently in your closet (no last-minute shopping allowed)?

  1. I'm with you - I'm confused by how one gets invited to a show, and what you would wear! Here's to keeping it real and working on our personal styles instead ;)

  2. I have NO idea what I would wear. I would probably be exhausted from changing my clothes in cabs if I was there. It's just such a mystery to me!

  3. NYFW doesn't appeal to me much. Like you said, it's over-priced clothes that are really only meant for a few people. I don't think I could be in a room with that many pretentious individuals and not scream!

  4. I really agree with you. I just don't "get" Fashion Week. For instance, why are they parading their spring/summer looks when we haven't fully hit fall yet! I think I'd be more inspired by those in attendance than by the designers, so I'd dress for them. I have a nude high/low tunic I haven't gotten to wear yet that I'd probably mix with some deep red tights.

  6. So perfectly sleek! Black and leopard print never fail.

I feel the same way about fashion week. Like, can I wear Vans? My feet really such, haha. I have this white t-shirt that says "BITCHES" down the front that I feel is only appropriate in fashion week sort of situations where you're suppose to be pushing the envelope. I would probably wear it with fur and a huge, fancy skirt.

  8. I don't really understand how you get invited either. Lots of my favorite bloggers are blowing up their Instagrams right now and it looks awesome and scary all at the same time. If you figure it out let me know!

  9. I actually attended a few shows this season and how I got invited is I emailed the PR people for the designers that I wanted to see this season. Some people responded with either an invite or no and some didn't respond at all. I went cuz I wanted to experience it first hand and to cover for my blog. And even though I enjoyed it, I still don't get how they decided who got to be seated and where. However, the outfit you have on is really nice. When it comes down to what to wear for NYFW it's all about what makes you feel comfortable and your style. There's people there who just screams "trying to too hard. I'm only wearing this so I can get my photo in all the magazines" and people who are actually there who want to experience it and want good coverage for their blog. That was my two cents on the situation. Hope that helps a bit.

  21. Loving this outfit! So sleek and edgy!

I would love to go to fashion week but you do bring up some interesting questions that would make me extremely nervous actually attending NYFW or any fashion week.

  22. I probably wouldn't wear head to toe Kate Spade to Kate Spade, but I would probably wear something. Just to say "Yes, I adore this brand, it's in my everyday wardrobe" Of course if I could wear Head to Toe Kate Spade all the time, I would. Completely in a heartbeat.

  26. This outfit is STUNNING, I love the shoes! And I'm totally in the same boat as you... Fashion Week is a bit confusing to me, even though I'm currently living in New York! I would love to be a volunteer for the Spring collections, though!

  27. I'm so intrigued by NYFW, it's like the biggest recognition for bloggers. Especially if you're from Europe, it's not easy to get to! I was wondering the same thing about wearing a designer to their own show, and I see that mostly celebrities tend to do that :)

  28. You look great in a peplum :) I did a post like this not too long ago when I entered a contest for NYFW. My look was really classic but with an edge, just like yours! Great minds, eh?
