The Almighty Fishtail

Top: American Eagle (old); Skirt: Asos (similar); Heels: Michael Kors

The fishtail has long been a messy, beautiful hairstyle that I have wanted to recreate, but found my hands to be incapable of achieving... until I spent some quality YouTube tutorial time (and perusing the Barefoot Blonde to get some perfect-hair motivation) and decided it had to happen to my hair. Cue my messy, awful, always-falling out, but woohoo-finally! fishtail above. I've been regularly fishtail braiding my hair on days when my boyfriend jeans need extra oomph or I want to wear a red lip but not look angry or harsh (it happens). I am left without much to say but to quote Tobias Funke's amazing "huzzah!"

I think that the key to this fishtail braid working in my layered and always clean hair (it actually works best in day old or two day old hair that's a bit less shiny and slippery) has been getting a texturizing "beach hair" spray and succumbing to the messiness. I finally just came to terms with my hair falling all over the place and looking generally unkempt when in a fishtail braid. It actually looks even more awesome by mid-morning when I look like I meant for it to be so bobby-pinned into place. Whoever invented the current trend of not looking put together in every way (boyfriend jeans, loose styles, natural fabrics, messy hair) has my vote!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend full of awesome outfits, pretty weather like we did, and good food!

  11. I always feel self-conscious wearing messy, relaxed hair styles, but maybe I've never gotten it right. Yours is perfection, and you look especially gorgeous today.

  14. Those hazy pictures are so gorgeous! I need to learn how to do that!
Your hair looks beautiful. I love that it's a little bit messy, it just adds to the appeal. I've tried to replicate quite a few hair tutorial before and have never been successful. Even when my hair was long it still wouldn't stay in place no matter what hair style I tried. I kind of gave up on experimenting with it.
