Strawberry Sunday

Ben is serious about u-pick fruit. Well, just fruit. But adding a u-pick element to his fruit-eating habits brings them to a new level. It's an outdoor activity, absolutely delicious, and you can taste the ripe fruit, right off the vine/bush/plant to your heart's content. I think it appeals to his inner, puttering farmer.

He convinced me to go for the first day of the u-pick season out on Sauvie Island about 20 minutes North of Portland after we tasted some amazingly ripe strawberries at the farmer's market on Saturday. They are seriously so juicy and so sweet that they fill the air with smells and stain you with bright red color. I got strawberry juice on my white dress sitting around eating them last night, as the juice was dripping down my chin in fat, red rivulets.

After picking four pounds of berries this morning, we naturally headed right to Safeway to get angel food cake and whipped cream for strawberry shortcake. Is there anything more summery and beautiful than ripe strawberries oozing all over sweet cake, topped in bright white whipped cream? I think not.

If you're not drooling and heading out ASAP to get yourself some berries... do so.

  1. A) I want that nail polish B) I have always wanted to go strawberry picking but Kansas isn't super awesome for that sort of thing. Portland once again is where it's at.
