Busybody

Cardigan: c/o Aeropostale; Dress: Gap (very similar); Leggings: c/o No Nonsense; Boots: Freebird; Bracelet: Macy's (on sale!)

I have always found people that say "I'm so busy" to be irritating. And I've always found "I'm so busy" to be code for "I'm bad at time management." I had a couple of friends in college that always used to throw their hands up when asked if they'd watched the latest [insert popular TV show here] and nearly swoon while declaring how insanely busy they were. I found myself thinking - if you don't have time to watch one thirty to forty minute episode of television in your day, you are definitely not being efficient at your homework/meal-time/extracurricular activities. For most people in a small liberal arts college, this sort of "being busy" was/is a choice and rarely the result of needing to work multiple jobs or needing to take care of children/parents.

Nowadays, the "so busies" have taken on a new meaning. I have a colleague who is the mother of a toddler, a successful recruiter, and is currently building her own home. I have no idea how she has the time to even breathe, much less look put together every day. I also know a few working women that work not only 60 hour a week day jobs, but freelance on the side, adding even more hours to their busy schedules. In these cases, busy is real. It's not just a case of bad time management but a case of not having enough hours in the day to do everything you want to or need to do.

I recently entered the realm of "oh my god, is this what it means when people say they're busy?" and after looking at my dry, red eyes tonight (the result of many an hour of screen time), it physically shows. I've been getting up and working on calligraphy projects (for which I am so grateful) at 6 a.m., going to work from 8-5, coming home to continue those 6 a.m. projects, eating dinner on top of sheets of ink covered paper, finishing those projects around 10, and getting to bed late after attempting to work on the blog.

I have felt "so busy" in the past month, but I have also felt so lucky to be so busy. For one thing, it means I'm pursuing my passion and I'm able to make a bit more money on the side. It also means that time is flitting by and I'm left without as much time to worry, fret, or bite my nails. It has been a welcome relief to have too much to do every night to sit around watching endless episodes of TV and hemming and hawing over wedding decisions.

Perhaps there's more to this "so busy" bit than meets the eye. Perhaps it's good for the soul!

  8. I've certainly been in one of those 'so busy' waves for awhile now. I'm getting to the point where I have needed to cut a few things out to relieve the stress.

  9. Great post! "Busy" can have so many meanings - I think often it's also used as an excuse. Keeping busy is important to me as long as there is balance to make sure that I don't get overwhelmed and/or burned out. I do agree that it is also great to keep myself from over worrying about things b/c I am too busy.

  10. I am loving this look on you! But I agree, it has been totally crazy lately. I feel like I am losing my mind. Ugh I am trying to make sure I am taking time out of my day to do things that relax me. I'm getting an hour massage today!

  13. Very insightful. I think about this a lot. i;m always "busy" but at the end of the day did i get anything done? sometimes the answer is "no" and thats where the real problem is.

  14. I totally understand. I often feel like I have too few hours in the day to fit in all the things I want to do with everything I need to do (like laundry, driving to and from work, showering, ha!). I definitely agree it is important to squeeze in time for relaxing!

  17. First, this outfit looks so good on you. Seriously one of my favorites so far. Second, the thing I like about having things to do is that when you have a full schedule, you HAVE to schedule. I always feel more productive when I have a rhythm for sure.

  20. Busy can be really horrible and really wonderful - at the same time! I feel like I've been non-stop go recently, but this post makes me feel like maybe I've been having it easy. Anyway, I really love this outfit - blue and black can be so nice together, and I love the dress and sweater!

  21. I have tried to remove "I'm busy" from my excuse jar… it is an easy fall back, but I am doing things that I love, so while my days are full, it is my choice.

    Loving this sweater pretty lady!
