Casual

Cardigan: Ugg (similar, similar splurge)
Top: LOFT  (on sale! only $34.99)
Jeans: Gap
Flats: c/o Rockport

I'm not usually this... slouchy. But that cool Saturday morning, headed to the market for a fresh biscuit slathered in home-made jam and a big bunch of flowers, called for comfort of the highest order. This outfit is made up of my favorite things: a pair of boyfriend jeans from Gap that always feel perfectly baggy; this super-on-sale-super-soft-goes-with-anything LOFT softened tunic (I wear it for work, play, eating out, lounging, you name it); comfortable flats for jaunting around the city; and a cardigan that makes me feel like I'm napping.

Lately, I've been erring on the side of less-done rather than overdone. I feel happiest when I'm comfortable. Ill fitting pants, too-tight shirts, anything that hits at the wrong spot on my body and causes me to fidget always make me feel weird about my body. And that often projects out toward my behavior and physical movement. It lets other people know that I'm not confident in what I'm wearing. The same goes for make-up and hairstyles that make me feel not me. I smack my lips too much, check my teeth for lipstick, worry about my eye shadow, fuss with my bun. That sort of discomfort is projected outward.

This morning, attempting to get dressed for work, I kept taking on and off tops and twisting and pulling at my skirt. Nothing worked. I blamed it on my hair (this humid off and on rainy weather is wreaking havoc on it) and my make-up and some bags under my eyes. But really, it was all coming from the item I'd picked to wear. A black pleated skirt that sort of hit me wrong and made my waist look wide and my face washed out. Starting to become late for work, I ditched the whole thing and picked out my favorite skirt, a favorite blouse, and called it done. When in doubt, reach for the items that make you feel like you. Looking into the mirror in my favorite clothes, I instantly felt pretty.

Perhaps I should donate that skirt!

  3. Not just casual - classic! I had a rough couple of days this week, and my outfits reflected my emotions. I wore flannel shirts both days (thank goodness for the cooler weather) - sort of like comfort food but with clothes. Flannel makes me feel like I'm wearing a hug, which definitely helped. And good for you, BTW, to go with something you know you love. Get rid of that skirt!

As a general fan of slouchy, I approve.
