Picnic in Provence

Jacket: ZeroXposure; Chambray: Target; Jeans: Paige Denim; Shoes: Adidas

For my birthday, my Mom made an amazing picnic fashioned after a picnic in Provence recipe in Bon Appetit. We drove up the side of the mountain (in Hawaii) to 7,000 feet in elevation where it was very chilly and we needed to wear down jackets. We enjoyed french wine, cheeses, a baguette, marinated peppers and salami, roast chicken and tapenade. It was a really fun evening that ended in some wandering around the national park and bird watching.

A lot of people don't think of Hawaii as mountainous, but let these photos serve as an example. I grew up at about 4,000 feet in elevation and our weather got down to about 40 degrees on the coldest day in the winter. I remember wearing a lot of jackets, having a lot of wood stove mornings and heaters in the bathroom. Without central heating or air conditioning in the majority of homes on our island, the weather can be something to be reckoned with in the tropical heat or the mountain-y chill.

  1. My family's favorite vacation spot is Hawaii so I was lucky enough to go 14 times in my childhood and once last January for my college graduation. There is nothing like the beauty of the islands. I wish I could take my boyfriend there but it's too expensive with our minimum wage jobs.

I haven't spent much time at that elevation but it's hard to imagine Hawaii to be that cold! I know the weather changes constantly--sunny one moment, pouring down (warm) rain the next. I'm jealous you got to spend so many years there.
