In the Pink

Sweater (similar), top (similar), wool slacks: Gap; Heels: BCBG via TJ Maxx (similar)

I work in an office full of people that only notice things like: fires and empty coffee pots when they want a refill. I could very likely die at my desk and no one would come over until I started to smell. But one thing that does perk them up is anything sparkly or neon. When I wear this sweater to work, people actually comment on what I'm wearing (which doesn't happen on any other day), and though it's usually a "Oh... bright" monotone reaction - it definitely adds voice to an otherwise quiet scene. I think that a pop of color on a winter day is just what cubicled office spaces need. When I saw a woman pass in a neon pink cardigan the other day, I was woken out of my lull as well and sat a bit straighter for a few minutes just digesting.

I was looking at Nina's instagram feed the other day while she was debating wearing sequins and plaid to work in a business casual environment and it got me thinking about what we wear to work and how others react. Nina and some of the commenters on her feed were saying that they couldn't get away with crazy looks at work otherwise colleagues would laugh and stare. I thought her outfit was perfectly put together and I would have loved to mix textures and prints like she did - but wonder if you all face snickering colleagues or fear of what you wear at work will make unpleasant waves.

My colleagues are often in fleeces, shorts and sandals, or in varying shades and wear of corduroy, so I rarely worry about ruffling feathers in a fashion-free environment. Do you all have any work outfit horror stories or bad experiences?

  3. I like this post title...obviously :) Although I do love neutrals/black, I think a pop of color in the winter can be a refreshing change...especially in dreary Portland! :)

  12. This is a great outfit. Love the brightness of the pink!
I work in a very casual office but it is also a male-dominant industry. So I'm always going to "stand out" in that way. Lucky for me, I get the luxury of dressing in a casual but still professional manner and can play around with different looks and brightness. I always get a comment from someone about something but I laugh since it's not meant in a cruel manner or offensive. So I suppose as long as you are comfortable, professional and still appropriate, you can pull off anything! =D

  14. I work at a campground/conference center and I walk in wearing 4 inch heels on a regular basis... I always get comments like "woah you are brave" or "wow Hope you look nice" because I'm wearing a blazer with jeans.. a blazer with jeans?!! Most of my cow-workers are in fleece or a hoodie... sigh.. Its all a balance.. if I was to show up wearing a gorgeous pant suit and heels it would look so out of place... however I can't bring myself to just let it all go! I mean I'm a fashion blogger for crying out loud! So I feel ya.. just stay true to yourself and do what makes you happy! Besides the prettiest girls are the happiest girls! And girlfriend you look fabulous in this look! Gray and pink is an epic combo.. and fabulous with your coloring! Keep the faith and stay strong in this fleece wearing Birkenstock sporting world.. it's not for sissies...

  20. My work environment is also pretty casual, but I usually dress nicer because I like to represent my profession and my role teaching in the classroom. And with my constant pattern-mixing and remixing, it's nice to hear colleagues say things like, "Mixing stripes and gingham? That's totally you!" :D
