It seems to me that one day, sometime in early March, you walk outside to find that the wind doesn't feel harsh on your legs and the air feels gentler. You look down to see that the soil looks fresh and tiny little bulbs are pushing their way out of the earth, yellow and purple blooms stretch toward the sky, and people carry tulips and daffodils to parties and home from the market. Yet just the day before, you were drinking cup after cup of tea to stay warm in the damp, freezing cold.
Spring seems to happen in an instant here. Sleeping snugly for endless months, and one morning waking up and greeting us with blooms. Today when we stepped outside, I was comfortable in this silk dress and jacket, with the temperatures rising toward the high sixties and the wind tempered down to a gentle breeze. We peered down at tiny daffodils all abloom and pansies smiling up toward the cloudy sky. Tulip trees were alive with white blossoms and the air smelled sweet of blooming hedges in our tiny little waterfront park.
I don't know how the magic of spring is so sudden, but it's always welcomed with open arms. When my tights can be peeled off and my frillier skirts reintroduced into the closet, all is well with the world. I hope spring is abloom where you are too and you can stoop down to smell the blossoms sometime soon!
