All of the Trends

Jacket: The Limited (similar splurgesimilar save); Top: c/o Aeropostale; Skirt: J.Crew; Heels: c/o Lulu*s (similar); Sunglasses: Ray-Ban

There are some trends that do NOT work for me. Spiky stilettos make me wobble. Bubble skirts (when they were a thing) made me look chubby. Ultra-mini skirts aren't flattering on my thighs. The empire waist - not great considering I have a bust and wider thighs. And I'm not going to venture into the overall or romper trend... at all. My mom used to say that "just because it's a trend, doesn't mean it works on your body type." True. Story. As much as we often try to deny it.

But there are some trends that roll around that get me excited, because they're built for my body type. I pretty much threw a party when the midi-skirt came back. It hits me on the calf, where my legs are thin and look great. When long pencil skirts started filling Nordstrom's racks, I rejoiced - they start at the natural waist and develop an hourglass shape all the way down to the upper calf. They're perfect for a taller, curvier body-type. Chiffon as a trendy fabric was also a godsend. It definitely flatters my upper half and when I can find a chiffon dress, it makes everything look smooth and fantastic.

The crop top is one of those trends that makes many people cringe. And I know it's a trend that some people just have to forgo entirely due to various reasons (children, storing weight around their middle, weather, etc.). So luckily it only comes around once a decade and makes its waves during the summer for the lucky folks with abs or that are naturally thin. I've loved seeing some bloggers style the crop top with really high-waisted skirts, showing a sliver of stomach. Kerry Washington, the ultimate style-icon Scandal star, wore a crop top and full-midi skirt recently during her pregnancy and rocked it by some magic.

This was my first real crop top in public experience. I bought this body-con top from Aeropostale in two different colors and am unsure whether I'm bold enough to wear this on any but the skinniest of days when the weather is so warm that people are giddy with sunshine and can easily forget what they saw. But this Sunday, during the briefest period of sunshine in an otherwise thunder-y day, I definitely enjoyed wearing this. It actually improved my posture as I was conscious of what my stomach looked like to all passers-by. So, what's your take on this most controversial of trends?

  1. I like this outfit a lot! I don't know how cropped top would look on me and I still haven't dared to "test" that, but I do like your outfit a lot and it inspires me to finally go and buy myself a crop top and style it into feminine outfit like this one :)

  5. The crop top trend terrified me at first, but as soon as I tried one I fell in love and now own 3 of them! (I'm actually wearing a crop top + skater skirt combo on my blog today haha). You look incredible!! Your waistline is so tiny, and your choice of pieces accentuate this, so great styling!

  8. You look lovely and your body can carry the trend well, but in general, when I see cropped tops, all I can think is "Topanga called and wants her shirt back!"

  10. Ah I know trends can be tricky. I do not think I will ever embrace the crop top trend though I must say it looks great on you. And LOVE the shoes.
