Back in Pink

Dress: c/o ModDeals; Necklace; c/o ModDeals; Bracelet: xo veronika; Heels: Michael Kors

I dropped my parents off at the airport this morning before work and it was, as always, way too sad. I only see my parents about once a year (if we're lucky) and the farewell is always made so much worse by the phrase "see you in a year." I usually spend the day they leave a total mess, but I was flat out too tired today to muster any strength to feel upset. I swear that the older my parents get, the more fun and active they get. They ran Ben and me into the ground with hike after hike, cocktail after cocktail, adventure after adventure, and I even have a sunburn to prove it.

So now, we're all settling back into our routines. The cat is at my feet, relishing his comfy bed and quiet house. The fans are whirring to keep it cool on this warm summery night. Ben is downstairs listening to his lectures and meandering the web. He made us a pesto pasta and turkey meatballs for dinner tonight, herbs picked fresh from our balcony garden. I'm back to the blog, my favorite, neglected friend. It feels so calm and peaceful to be laying here with little to do but go to bed and wake to another work day. Back to the grind.

My heart always feels a little bit broken in the empty, quiet house when my family leaves, but lately it feels more and more comforted by my own new family's established routine. The cat crawling over Ben and me as we go to sleep, the world closing its eyes outside, the dishwasher running torrents of water over dinner plates. It's definitely quieter, but there's a certain peace to discovering that your family is growing, that it's not just my parents, brother and I anymore, but that I have my own little ecosystem to return to.

  1. I really liked reading your entry. :) As much as my mom and I have differences, sending her to the airport (or her sending me) always leaves me in tears. I'm glad you got to spend time with your parents and that you have a little ecosystem to return to. :)

  2. I love having my parents visit, they always want me to show them a new place around Austin and it's so much fun! I'm lucky enough to have them only an hour away from me, but I still miss them every time they leave!

  4. I get sad when my parents leave after they come to visit too and they only live 3 hours away so get to see them about once a month or once every two months. I can't imagine seeing them only one a year. Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun though!
