A Drop in the Bucket

Skirt: c/o Chicwish
Flats: c/o Rockport

I bought my first "nice," non-disposable purse from the Coach Outlet store in college. Ben and I were driving from Eugene, Oregon back to Tacoma, Washington and stopped off at the outlet mall, made the impulse buy, and didn't experience a second of regret. I was so excited to have a black leather bag that didn't disintegrate in the rain and I ran that bag into the ground. I have since donated it, but even years in to its life, it didn't show any external wear. That bag sold me on leather, high quality purses and I haven't looked back. There's something satisfying about owning a product that has stitching that doesn't come undone, that is made of a natural product that doesn't show wear and tear, and that always elevates an outfit.

My second, nice purse came from GiGi New York about two years ago due to a fortuitous giveaway win and it is probably the best purse I have ever (and still do) owned. It is a huge tote, has shown almost no signs of wear after two years of every-single-day lugging (I cram that purse full of shoes, cameras, make-up bags, jackets, snacks, purchases), and seems permanently trendy. Plain black leather and vast capacity for gum, receipts and open lipstick containers. Can't lose!

I just bought this Madewell bucket bag to attempt to diversify my black-purse line-up. Turns out I didn't get very diverse. There's just something about black leather purses that I can't give up. I've never used a brown leather purse half as much and anything printed gets pretty quickly given up in favor of something black and leather. I'm just getting this purse worn in (the inside doesn't have any rogue Safeway receipts or gum wrappers yet), but I can already tell that Madewell is doing something right - it's so simple and so comfortable that I kind of want to wear it even when I'm sitting on the couch.

What are your go-to handbag brands? Do you invest or buy multiple purses a year?

  4. I am so in love with your style! Always classy and adorable :-) as far as purses go, I'm still rocking a black canvas satchel bag I bought on my first trip to New York 6 years ago! I think it may be time to invest in a nice, versatile leather purse that won't fray. Thanks for sharing, cheers!

  7. I am in such need of a new purse! I always check the discount stores like the Rack but can never find one, and I'm way too chicken to pay full price at a department store.
