Strawberry Fields Forever

You all know that Ben and I love U-Pick farms in the spring and summer. Here in Portland, it's hard to miss a weekend of picking, because there is such an abundance of fresh veggies and fruits to be pulled right from the vine/branch/bush and immediately consumed. Last year we spent nearly every single weekend on Sauvie or in Hood River, picking everything from strawberries and plums, to blueberries and peaches, to peppers and heirloom tomatoes. I know that I post, ad nauseam, about U-Pick, and very sadly for you, U-Pick season is back. And I'm here, holding a bunch of freshly picked fruit, ready to bore you with it.

We hit Kruger's Farm Market on Sauvie Island (30 mins from downtown) this past weekend (where we did a set of engagement photos last year and picked apples in September) as they were open for their historically early u-pick strawberry season. Apparently, we're two weeks away from their previous earliest-open date - a testament to the weird and warm winter we had here in Portland. Kruger is an awesome spot that has a big farm market, many u-pick fields, and good pricing. Strawberries were $2 a pound and we ended up with a big flat for about $9.

We ran those strawberries right home, made an angel food cake, and then topped the cake with sliced strawberries fresh off the plant and a honey whipped cream. Recipe soon to come!
