Saturday Wanders

In need of some greenery, Ben and I headed out of the city (a few miles) to a nearby wetlands to do some bird-watching and get a walk in. It turned out that unlike the massive wetlands that we used to visit in Tacoma, this was a mini-wetlands trail and we found ourselves at the end of it before it felt like we'd started. Oh well! We did get to see some pretty scenery, a bald eagle (the shot of me pointing into the sky is when we saw the eagle carrying something back to his nest), pelicans, egrets, some songbirds, frogs, and some herons.

After a full week of concrete and tall buildings and people lining the streets, I absolutely need a break and need to look out farther than two blocks onto something green. It feels insanely good to get out of the city, drive and feel the wind actually blowing. Living in a city is teaching me that I am a mid-size city kind of person, but I need to live just far enough away from the city not to feel entirely encircled in concrete and asphalt and buildings with big, shiny windows. I want a garden and quiet road and a pretty view that's just close enough to visit restaurants and enjoy the nightlife of a big city.

The wetlands afternoon a bit of a bust, we headed out to Breakside Brewery in Northeast Portland and had a big sampler that included a Passionfruit sour. It was the most sour anything I've ever almost enjoyed. I don't know if I'd recommend it unless you are into warheads or other cruelly sour items. Invigorated with sampling, we then drove over to the Clear Creek Distillery in Northwest Portland and had a great time trying brandies and fruit liqueurs. All in all, it was a great day to explore the edges of the city, get some green, and try some delicious local spirits.

Hope you had an eventful Saturday too!
